ESAT Score Boundaries: What Is a Good Score?

There is no official ESAT pass mark. Here is how the 1.0–9.0 scale works, what your result means and how universities use it.

The short answer

UAT-UK says the ESAT scale is designed so a typical candidate scores around 4.5, while roughly 10% score above 7.0. That makes 6.0+ a strong result and 7.0+ exceptional—but these are useful benchmarks, not university cut-offs.

How ESAT scoring works

Each ESAT module is marked separately on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0, to one decimal place. There is no single combined ESAT score. Your raw mark is converted statistically, so the same raw percentage can map to a slightly different scaled score across test forms.

7.0–9.0	Exceptional	UAT-UK reports that roughly 10% of candidates score above 7.0.
6.0–6.9	Strong	Clearly above the typical candidate score, but not a guaranteed offer.
4.5–5.9	Typical to above average	The scale is designed so a typical candidate scores around 4.5.
1.0–4.4	Below the typical score	Universities still consider the result alongside the rest of the application.

These descriptions are guidance, not official grade boundaries or admissions thresholds.

Are there official ESAT grade boundaries?

No. UAT-UK does not publish pass/fail grade boundaries, and the universities below do not publish a fixed score that guarantees an interview or offer. Treat claims such as “you need exactly 6.5” with caution. Admissions teams use ESAT as one part of an application rather than as a standalone qualification.

What is a good ESAT score for each university?

Cambridge

Cambridge requires ESAT for relevant science and engineering courses, including Engineering and Chemical Engineering. It publishes no minimum score, so your result is considered with your academic record and the rest of the admissions process.

Imperial

Imperial explicitly says admissions-test scores are only one aspect of an application: a high score does not guarantee success and a lower score does not guarantee rejection. Its published department-level distributions can provide context, but they are not cut-offs.

UCL

UCL requires ESAT for Electronic & Electrical Engineering BEng/MEng applicants from 2027 entry (including 2028 deferred entry). UCL has not published a minimum ESAT score for these courses.

What score should you target?

Aim to move consistently above 6.0 across full timed sections rather than chasing one unusually high result.

Track each module separately—the universities receive a distinct score for every module you sit.
